A new mandatory drug testing policy may be on the horizon for the Fiji Police Force, as indicated by Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew. He announced that he has instructed the legal and policy division to reassess current drug testing procedures. The proposed changes could shift from random drug testing to mandatory testing for all officers and civilian staff within the organization.

Commissioner Chew stated that the initiative would commence with personnel at the Commissioner’s office, including himself, underscoring his commitment to tackling drug-related issues within the force. He expressed disappointment over recent reports of police officers engaging in illegal drug activities, highlighting a case where an officer was caught purchasing drugs while on duty in Labasa.

Chew reassured the public that any allegations of corruption would be thoroughly investigated, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct. Supporting this initiative, Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, acknowledged the necessity for reform within the police force, stating that while there are concerns, many officers are dedicated public servants.

This proposed policy reflects a proactive approach towards accountability and professionalism in law enforcement. It aims not only to enhance the integrity of the Fiji Police Force but also to restore public trust in the institution. The emphasis on reform signals a hopeful direction for the future of policing in Fiji, fostering a safer environment for all citizens.

In summary, Fiji’s police leadership is looking to implement a mandatory drug testing policy to address corruption and misconduct, with strong support from government officials, showcasing a commitment to reinforce the integrity of the police force.
