A new mandatory drug testing policy might soon be implemented throughout the Fiji Police Force. Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew announced his directive to the Force’s legal and policy division to reassess current drug testing protocols. This reevaluation aims to transition from random drug testing to compulsory testing for all police officers and civilian personnel within the organization.
Commissioner Chew highlighted that the new testing policies will commence with staff at his office, himself included. He is pushing for a swift report on this issue, emphasizing its importance. Chew expressed his disappointment regarding allegations of officers involved in illegal drug activities, referencing a recent incident where a Labasa police officer was apprehended while purchasing drugs in uniform.
He assured the public that any corrupt practices would be dealt with sternly, with thorough investigations into any reports made through official channels. Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has acknowledged the pressing need for reform within the police force, admitting that while a reset and professionalism are essential, there are numerous dedicated officers committed to serving the community.
This move towards scrutinizing and enhancing drug testing within the police reflects a commitment to uphold integrity and public trust in law enforcement, fostering a safer environment for all citizens. With the acknowledgment of both the need for reform and the presence of good officers, an optimistic outlook can be seen as Fiji aims to strengthen its police force.
