A new mandatory drug testing policy may soon be implemented for the entire Fiji Police Force. Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, recently announced that he has tasked the legal and policy division to review existing drug testing protocols. This review will explore the possibility of transitioning from random drug tests to mandatory testing for all police officers and civilian staff.
Mr. Chew stated that this initiative will begin with personnel at the Commissioner’s office, including himself, emphasizing the urgent nature of this issue. He expressed disappointment over recent incidents, including a police officer in Labasa who was caught purchasing drugs while in uniform. Mr. Chew reassured the public that any reports of corrupt practices would be thoroughly investigated.
Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, also recognized the necessity for reform within the police force. He conveyed that while improvements are needed, there are many dedicated officers committed to serving the community.
The initiative to implement mandatory drug testing reflects a proactive approach to enhance the integrity of the police force in Fiji. This could lead to a more professional environment, ensuring that the public has confidence in law enforcement. With these measures in place, both police accountability and public trust could improve significantly.
In summary, the proposed mandatory drug testing policy aims to address illegal drug activities within the Fiji Police Force and uphold a standard of professionalism among its members.
