Twenty-one police officers from the Fiji Police Force are on leave as investigations into their alleged involvement in drug-related activities progress. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu stated that some of these officers will receive half pay, contingent upon the severity of the allegations against them. This step is part of the police force’s ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crime in the community.
Commissioner Tudravu indicated that the investigation’s conclusion is expected soon, with decisions regarding the officers’ futures in the force to follow. The Fiji Police are actively conducting operations, including Operation Sasamaki, aimed at addressing drug offenses and ensuring the safety of the public.
Tudravu called upon community leaders, including those from churches and the Vanua, to be vigilant and report illicit activities. His emphasis on transparency and accountability reflects the police’s commitment to restoring public trust amid widespread concerns regarding integrity within law enforcement.
This situation draws parallels to previous incidents within the Fiji Police Force, where officers have been implicated in drug-related misconduct. For example, past reports highlighted a senior officer who was found with substances believed to be cocaine and methamphetamine, reinforcing the police leadership’s zero-tolerance stance toward corruption.
As investigations continue, there is optimism that these actions will lead to disciplinary measures for those involved and strengthen the ethical standards expected of all police personnel. The community’s active participation in reporting illegal activities is vital to fostering an environment of trust and safety within the region.
