The Fiji Police Force has implemented movement restrictions in Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki Town due to flooding concerns. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu reported that water has begun to seep into shops, making it unsafe for residents to travel in and out of these towns. These measures not only prioritize public safety but also aim to protect local infrastructure from potential damage.
ACPO Driu emphasized the importance of these precautions to safeguard both people and property from opportunistic behavior during this challenging time. Currently, there are four active Evacuation Centres in the Western Division, housing 226 individuals, with expectations that this number will grow if heavy rain persists.
As part of these safety protocols, the main highway linking Ba to Rakiraki is closed to all traffic, and access to Tavua Town is now restricted. The entrance to Ba town is similarly closed to vehicles. Police teams are actively evacuating individuals from affected areas, remaining on standby throughout the night. The Fiji Police Force is dedicated to closely monitoring the ongoing situation to ensure community safety.
In challenging situations like this, the community’s ability to come together and support one another shines through. With the authorities taking proactive steps to ensure safety and provide shelter, there is hope that the residents will navigate this tough time with resilience and strong community spirit.
