The Fiji Police Force has announced movement restrictions in Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki Town tonight due to rising water levels that are beginning to infiltrate businesses. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu emphasized the importance of these measures for both public safety and the protection of local infrastructure.
Driu stated, “We are taking this precaution because of everyone’s safety. This is also done to protect the properties in town from opportunists.” As a precautionary measure, four Evacuation Centres have been established in the Western Division, currently sheltering 226 people, with numbers anticipated to increase if the rain persists.
Due to these conditions, the main highway from Ba to Rakiraki has been closed to all traffic, and Tavua Town has become inaccessible. The entrance to Ba town is also closed off to vehicles. Driu assured that police standby teams are actively evacuating individuals from disaster-prone areas and will remain vigilant throughout the night as the Fiji Police Force continues to monitor the evolving situation.
This proactive response by authorities reflects the community’s resilience and commitment to ensuring the safety of its residents during challenging circumstances. With the proper precautions in place, it is hoped that the affected towns will recover swiftly and that the community will come together in support of those in need.
