The Fiji Police Force has implemented movement restrictions in the towns of Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki due to rising water levels that have begun to infiltrate local shops. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu emphasized that these measures are for the safety of the citizens and to protect the towns’ infrastructure.
Driu stated, “We are taking this precaution because of everyone’s safety. This is also done to protect the properties in town from opportunists.” Currently, four evacuation centers are operating in the Western Division, providing shelter for 226 individuals, with expectations for that number to increase if the rainfall continues.
Access to the main highway connecting Ba and Rakiraki has been suspended for all traffic, and Tavua Town is no longer accessible from the entrance. Additionally, the entrance to Ba town is closed to vehicular movement. Driu assured that police standby teams are engaged in evacuating residents from areas affected by the disaster and will remain vigilant throughout the night. The Fiji Police Force is committed to monitoring the situation closely.
