The Fiji Police Force has implemented movement restrictions in the towns of Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki due to rising water levels that have begun to flood shops in these areas. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu emphasized the need for these precautions to ensure public safety and to protect the towns’ infrastructure from the effects of the flooding.
Driu explained that the restrictions aim to safeguard residents as well as properties from potential theft during this challenging time. Currently, there are four active evacuation centers in the Western Division, providing shelter to 226 individuals, with that number likely to increase if the rain continues.
The main highway connecting Ba to Rakiraki has been closed to all traffic, and access to Tavua Town is no longer possible from the entrance, as authorities have shut down the entry to Ba Town as well.
Police teams are actively evacuating individuals from areas at risk and will remain on standby throughout the night, closely monitoring the situation as it develops.
While the conditions may seem dire, the quick response and precautions taken by the authorities demonstrate a commitment to ensuring public safety. This proactive approach helps instill a sense of community support and resilience during such weather events.
In summary, the Fiji Police Force is taking strong measures to protect communities in Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki amid flooding, ensuring safe evacuation procedures are in place and emphasizing the importance of public safety and property protection.
