The Fiji Police Force has implemented movement restrictions in the towns of Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki this evening due to rising water levels that have begun to inundate local shops. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu emphasized that these measures are necessary to ensure public safety and protect the towns’ infrastructure.
ACPO Driu stated, “We are taking this precaution because of everyone’s safety. This is also done to protect the properties in town from opportunists.” Currently, there are four active evacuation centers in the Western Division, providing shelter for 226 people, with the numbers anticipated to increase if rainfall persists.
As a result of the severe weather, the main highway connecting Ba and Rakiraki is closed to all traffic, and Tavua Town is no longer accessible from its entrance. The entrance to Ba is also closed off. The Fiji Police Force has mobilized standby teams to assist in evacuating residents from disaster-affected areas and will continue to closely monitor the situation.
In summary, the community is facing significant challenges due to adverse weather, but the proactive measures taken by authorities aim to ensure public safety and minimize potential harm. This situation highlights the importance of community resilience and the ongoing efforts of emergency services to safeguard residents during difficult times.
