The Fiji Police Force has implemented movement restrictions in Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki Town due to rising water levels that pose safety risks. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu emphasized that the situation is critical, particularly as water has begun to flood local shops, making it unsafe for residents to move around.
These restrictions aim to safeguard both the individuals in these towns and the infrastructure against potential damage and looting. “We are taking this precaution because of everyone’s safety. This is also done to protect the properties in town from opportunists,” stated ACPO Driu.
In addition to the movement bans, four Evacuation Centres have been established in the Western Division, currently sheltering 226 individuals, with forecasts suggesting that these numbers could increase if the rain persists. The main highway connecting Ba to Rakiraki is closed to all traffic, and access to Tavua Town has also been restricted. Traffic access to Ba Town is similarly barred.
ACP Driu mentioned that police teams are actively evacuating people from high-risk areas and will remain vigilant throughout the night, as the Fiji Police Force continuously assesses the situation.
Overall, while the circumstances are serious, the proactive measures taken by the authorities reflect a commitment to ensuring public safety and providing necessary shelter to those affected by the inclement weather. As the community comes together during this challenging time, support and resilience shine through, underscoring the importance of looking out for one another in times of crisis.
