Fiji Police Embrace Bold ‘Reset’ to Tackle Evolving Crime

Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua has stated that crime is evolving and criminals are becoming more sophisticated, which necessitates a new police strategy. He made these remarks during the Fiji Police Force’s 150th anniversary parade in Nasova.

Tikoduadua introduced the concept of the “Police Reset”, emphasizing that it represents a commitment to fundamentally change the operations of the Fiji Police Force in response to the rapidly changing landscape of crime. He noted that crime is not stagnant but continuously evolving, citing examples like sophisticated cybercrime, organized crime, and the proliferation of illicit drugs.

To tackle these complex challenges, Tikoduadua stressed the need for adaptation. He explained that the Police Reset aims to equip officers with the necessary skills, tools, and resources to address modern threats, creating a more agile and responsive police force that remains accountable to the public and closely connected to the communities it serves.

“This initiative is not about maintaining the status quo,” he stated. “It is about rethinking how we protect and serve.”

He also highlighted that the Police Reset would entail significant investment in technology, equipment, and personnel. Central to this transformation will be training, professional development, and a renewed focus on integrity and service.

In addition, he mentioned that there would be a stronger emphasis on community policing, as true safety extends beyond law enforcement to include building trust and cooperation with the communities the police are dedicated to protecting.
