Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has issued a caution to the public, asserting that although freedom of speech and expression is protected, it must be exercised with responsibility. Highlighting this point, Commissioner Tudravu stated, “I am urging social media users to act responsibly and sensibly when exercising their rights to freedom of speech and expression, as they are subjected to limitations.”
The Fiji Police Force has reinforced its capabilities to trace individuals spreading harmful content online. Commissioner Tudravu also confirmed ongoing cooperation with the Online Safety Commission aimed at promoting safer internet use. The investigation into this case is still ongoing.
This case draws attention to the broader issue of social media misuse in Fiji and the growing concerns about the spread of hate speech, cyberbullying, and harassment. Similar incidents have prompted ongoing discussions among authorities about the importance of responsible digital behavior. The continuous effort by the Fiji Police and the Online Safety Commission is part of a larger initiative to foster a secure and constructive digital environment.
Authorities have expressed a commitment to nurturing a respectful online culture that upholds the dignity of individuals and contributes to a peaceful society. With continuous collaboration between law enforcement, safety commissions, and the community, there is hope for creating a more positive and responsible social media landscape where challenges can be transformed into opportunities for constructive engagement.
