Police in Fiji have reported significant successes in their battle against drug trafficking, having seized over $81 million worth of illegal drugs within the past three months. Acting Commissioner of Police Aporosa Lutunauga announced that a staggering nine tonnes of illicit substances were confiscated from March to May, including a significant amount of marijuana which constituted the majority of the seizures.

Lutunauga emphasized that these operations, executed in four phases under the police’s tracking program, prevented about $79 million worth of illegal drugs from reaching the market. The report also indicated that 4.9 kilograms of white drugs, valued at $2.4 million, were intercepted during this period.

The fight against drug trafficking continues to be a pressing concern for law enforcement, with the Acting Commissioner highlighting that community involvement is essential in successfully addressing the problem. “The police cannot do it alone. We need your assistance—especially when dealing with drugs,” Lutunauga stated.

While the police forces have made significant progress, challenges remain in identifying those responsible for illegal drug farming, as many investigations have struggled to pinpoint the owners of the farms raided. Lutunauga called for community support in providing information that could assist law enforcement in tackling these challenges.

This ongoing effort builds upon previous initiatives that have yielded positive outcomes, indicating a prolonged and committed stance against drug-related offenses in Fiji. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu previously described the situation as a “matter of life and death,” with increasing community engagement positioned as a critical factor in the fight against illicit drugs. As police continue to dismantle drug networks, there is hope for a drug-free future for the community, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts between law enforcement and citizens.

The proactive approach and commitment demonstrated by the Fiji Police not only contribute to immediate safety but also pave the way for improved community welfare, fostering a healthier environment for future generations.
