The Fiji Police Mpaisa task force has taken action against two individuals accused of committing financial deception via a mobile money transfer application. According to police reports, the suspects, who are from Davuilevu and Koronivia, allegedly orchestrated a rental car scam.

On September 17, 2024, it is claimed that the duo created multiple Facebook accounts to advertise cars for rent, with payments to be processed through the app. A victim from Nadi fell prey to this scheme, sending $190 to the mobile number listed by the scammers. After attempting to reach out to the accused, the victim realized he had been scammed and promptly reported the incident to the Nadi Police Station.

The two suspects, a 29-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, now face charges of Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.

This incident highlights the increasing sophistication of online scams, making it essential for individuals to exercise caution when dealing with financial transactions over social media platforms. While this situation is unfortunate for the victim, it reinforces the importance of reporting such incidents, which can help authorities combat fraud and protect others from similar scams. With proper awareness and vigilance, the community can work together to build a safer online environment.
