The Fiji Police Force is adopting a tougher stance on juvenile offenders, a shift underscored by Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu. Traditionally, the police have acted as mediators and guardians for youth acting out; however, recent troubling events, including a significant brawl involving students from a prominent Suva school, have called for this change in approach.
Commissioner Tudravu stressed the vital role of parents and guardians in guiding their children, stating that any minor engaging in criminal activities will face legal consequences. He firmly stated, “If they commit an offense, they go; they’ll go to court. I am serious about that.” Tudravu urged that proactive discussions about the repercussions of poor choices are essential, rather than assuming leniency from law enforcement.
The intensified response is framed by a series of violent incidents among youth that reveal deeper community issues. Notably, Tudravu mentioned that these altercations are often the culmination of ongoing tensions and a lack of adequate supervision at home.
