The Fiji Police Mpaisa task force has taken action against two individuals accused of orchestrating a fraudulent car rental scheme utilizing the mobile money transfer app. A 29-year-old man from Davuilevu and a 37-year-old woman from Koronivia were charged for allegedly defrauding a victim through deceptive advertisements on multiple Facebook accounts.

The scam came to light when a resident from Nadi was conned out of $190 on September 17, after responding to one of the fake car rental listings. Upon attempting to reach out to the supposed renters, the victim soon realized he had been tricked and promptly reported the incident to authorities.

Both suspects are facing serious charges, including Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are expected to appear in Nasinu Magistrates Court today.

This incident highlights the importance of vigilance when engaging in online transactions. As online fraud continues to be a concern, it’s essential for individuals to verify the legitimacy of offers and report any suspicious activity. The prompt action by the Fiji Police serves as a reminder that authorities are actively working to combat such scams, aiming to protect citizens from financial deceit.
