Fiji Police Crack Down on Rental Car Scam: Two Charged!

The Fiji Police’s Mpaisa task force has taken action against two individuals for allegedly engaging in financial deception via a mobile money transfer application. According to the police, the suspects, who live in Davuilevu and Koronivia, are accused of collaborating to defraud victims through a rental car scam.

On September 17, 2024, it is claimed that the duo utilized several Facebook accounts to advertise vehicles for rent, directing potential customers to make payments through the app. A victim from Nadi was misled into sending $190 to the number associated with the scammers. Following the transaction, he attempted to contact the accused but subsequently discovered he had been scammed, prompting him to file a report at the Nadi Police Station.

As a result, a 29-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman have been charged with one count each of Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.

This case highlights the relentless efforts of law enforcement in tackling financial crimes and serves as a reminder for the public to exercise caution when engaging in online transactions. The swift action taken by the police in apprehending the suspects reflects a commitment to ensuring the safety and security of consumers in an increasingly digital world.
