The Fiji Police Mpaisa task force has arrested two individuals in connection with a fraudulent rental car scheme that exploited users of a mobile money transfer app. A 29-year-old man from Davuilevu and a 37-year-old woman from Koronivia are facing serious allegations after using multiple Facebook accounts to post fake advertisements for car rentals.
The scam came to light when a Nadi resident became a victim on September 17, parting with $190 through Mpaisa. Upon attempting to reach the supposed renters, the individual discovered the deceit and promptly informed the Nadi Police of the situation.
Charges have been filed against both suspects for Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are expected to appear in Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance when conducting transactions online. The prompt actions of the victim and the police highlight the community’s commitment to combating fraud and protecting others from similar schemes. As authorities continue to tackle such crimes, individuals are encouraged to exercise caution and verify the legitimacy of online offers before making any financial commitments.
