The Fiji Police Mpaisa task force has taken action against two individuals suspected of engaging in financial deception via a mobile money transfer app.
According to the police, the suspects, who live in Davuilevu and Koronivia, allegedly collaborated to defraud a victim through a rental car scam. It is reported that on September 17, 2024, they created multiple Facebook accounts to advertise cars for hire, instructing potential renters to make payments through the app.
A man from Nadi fell victim to the scheme, sending $190 to the provided mobile number. When he tried to contact the alleged scammers, he soon discovered he had been duped. He subsequently reported the incident to the police at the Nadi Police Station.
The accused, a 29-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, are facing charges for Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
