The Fiji Police Mpaisa task force has arrested two individuals in connection with a case of financial deception involving a mobile money transfer application. According to police reports, the suspects—one aged 29 and the other 37, residing in Davuilevu and Koronivia—are believed to have partnered in a rental car scam.

On September 17, 2024, the pair allegedly used multiple Facebook accounts to advertise cars for rent, instructing prospective renters to make payments via the mobile money app. A victim from Nadi, who paid $190 to the phone number provided, attempted to contact the alleged scammers but soon realized he had fallen victim to a fraudulent scheme. He subsequently reported the incident to the Nadi Police Station.

Both suspects have now been charged with one count each of Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are scheduled to appear in court at the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.

This incident serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of being vigilant when using online platforms and financial applications. The swift action taken by the police highlights their commitment to safeguarding the community from such scams, and it reinforces the need for individuals to verify any rental offers or financial transactions thoroughly before proceeding.
