Fiji Police Crack Down on M-PAiSA Deception Scams: Five Charged!

Fiji police have charged five men in connection with alleged money deception cases. Complaints were filed in Labasa, Ba, and Nadi, leading to each of the five being charged with a single count of obtaining financial advantage by deception.

According to police reports, the first accused is a 32-year-old man from Bulileka, Labasa, who is said to have fraudulently acquired $230 in March by sending a message to the victim requesting money. A 26-year-old man from Siberia, Labasa, is also accused of obtaining $80 from a member of the public for goods advertised on Facebook.

Both men appeared in Labasa Magistrate’s Court yesterday. In a separate incident, a 27-year-old resident from Rarawai, Ba, allegedly scammed a victim out of $2,847 through an online scheme. The victim reportedly clicked on an investment link on Facebook that instructed them to deposit the amount into bank accounts belonging to the accused. After making two deposits and receiving no response, the victim reported the case to the police.

Additionally, a 37-year-old man from Tauvegavega has been charged for supposedly obtaining $170 for a taxi permit through dishonest means. Another case involves a 49-year-old man from Navo, Nadi, who is accused of acquiring $286 through deceptive practices.
