The Fiji Police’s Mpaisa task force has charged two individuals in connection with a mobile money transfer scam involving fake car rentals. The suspects, a 29-year-old man from Davuilevu and a 37-year-old woman from Koronivia, are accused of using multiple Facebook accounts to create misleading advertisements for car rentals.
The scam came to light when a resident from Nadi was duped into sending $190 through the Mpaisa app on September 17. Upon attempting to reach out to the alleged renters, the victim realized he had been scammed, which prompted him to report the incident to the local police.
Both individuals are facing serious charges, including Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are set to appear in Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
