The Fiji Police Force has reported significant successes from recent snap checks aimed at deterring drug-related crimes. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu, operations at a roadblock on Bagasau yielded results when officers from the Tukavesi Police Station discovered a black bag containing dried leaves suspected to be marijuana during a search of a bus.
In another operation earlier this week, officers seized additional dried leaves believed to be marijuana from a vehicle on Sabeto Road, leading to the arrest of its two occupants. ACP Driu further detailed that a 35-year-old man in Navua was apprehended by the Southern Division’s Serious Organised Crime and Intelligence Unit (SD/SOCIU) while in possession of several sachets thought to contain methamphetamine, alongside more dried leaves suspected to be marijuana.
Another operation by the SD/SOCIU resulted in the arrest of an additional 35-year-old man in Navua for similar offenses involving marijuana. Furthermore, a raid in Raiwai, which included assistance from the K9 and Fiji Detector Dog Unit, led to the arrest of two men and a woman. Authorities discovered white substances believed to be methamphetamine, as well as various items suspected to be stolen property and both foreign and local currencies.
All substances seized during these operations have been sent for analysis, and the police have confirmed that joint raids will continue across the five policing divisions.
This proactive approach is an encouraging sign of the police’s commitment to tackling drug misuse and related crimes, fostering a safer community. Ongoing enforcement efforts demonstrate a concentrated focus on addressing illicit drug activities, which could significantly contribute to enhancing public safety in Fiji.
