The Fiji Police Force has reported that their recent snap checks are proving effective in curbing the trafficking of illegal drugs. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu highlighted significant seizures during road checks, particularly at a site on Bagasau road, where officers from the Tukavesi Police Station stopped a bus and discovered a black bag filled with dried leaves suspected to be marijuana.
Further operations conducted on Monday night resulted in additional seizures of dried marijuana leaves on Sabeto Road, leading to the arrest of two individuals found inside the vehicle. ACP Driu also mentioned a successful operation by the Southern Division’s Serious Organised Crime and Intelligence Unit (SD/SOCIU), resulting in the arrest of a 35-year-old Navua resident who possessed sachets of white powder suspected to be methamphetamine, as well as dried marijuana leaves. Another man of the same age from Navua was arrested in a separate incident for similar offenses.
A comprehensive raid involving the SD SOCIU, K9, and Fiji Detector Dog Unit in Raiwai was conducted recently, yielding further arrests of two men and a woman. These operations uncovered not only suspected methamphetamine but also items believed to be stolen and both foreign and local currencies.
All seized substances are currently undergoing analysis. Moving forward, the police plan to maintain joint raids across all five policing divisions, signaling a sustained effort to combat drug-related activities in the region.
This proactive approach by the Fiji Police highlights their commitment to maintaining public safety and reducing drug-related crime. The ongoing collaboration between various units could result in more successful operations in the future, reinforcing community trust and protecting citizens from the dangers posed by illicit drugs.
