Fiji Police Crack Down on Drug Offenders During Festive Season

The Fiji Police Force has reported the arrest of 76 individuals for drug-related offenses across the nation this week. This information was shared by Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, who noted that law enforcement is executing daily arrests for these offenses.

During the festive season, the police plan to ramp up their operations. Among those apprehended was a 64-year-old man caught at the Ba fish market with seven sachets of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana. Additionally, a 63-year-old carpenter was arrested at his Bua home with five green plants believed to be marijuana.

A 58-year-old man from Lautoka was found with a shopping bag containing dried leaves thought to be marijuana, alongside over three thousand dollars believed to be the proceeds from drug-related activities. Further arrests included a 53-year-old farmer from Labasa with a sachet of dried leaves, a 52-year-old bowser attendant in Wainibokasi holding three sachets, and a 51-year-old electrician from Lautoka caught with a large plastic bag and smaller bags containing a white substance believed to be methamphetamine.

The youngest arrested was a 19-year-old farmer apprehended in Savusavu with five sachets of what is believed to be marijuana. In a separate case, a 19-year-old female and her 25-year-old friend were taken into custody for not paying their taxi fare, during which they were also found in possession of a sachet of dried leaves.

A 29-year-old man from Makoi attempted to bribe police after being found with two sachets of dried leaves thought to be marijuana last Sunday. ACP Driu explained that these arrests were made through various methods, such as stop and searches, roadblocks, raids, and with the help of their K-9 Unit, while emphasizing the continual efforts of their awareness teams.

This ongoing police initiative reflects a commitment to combat drug-related issues in Fiji, especially during a time when illicit activities may increase.
