The Fiji Police Force reported the arrest of 76 individuals nationwide this week for drug-related offenses. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu highlighted the ongoing efforts of law enforcement, indicating that the police are conducting daily arrests to combat drug issues, particularly as the festive season approaches.
Among those apprehended was a 64-year-old man at Ba fish market, found with seven sachets of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana. Other arrests included a 63-year-old carpenter from Bua, who had five green plants believed to be marijuana, and a 58-year-old man in Lautoka carrying a shopping bag filled with dried leaves and over three thousand dollars thought to be derived from drug activity.
Additional arrests included a 53-year-old farmer from Labasa and a 52-year-old bowser attendant in Wainibokasi, both found in possession of marijuana. A 51-year-old electrician in Lautoka was arrested with clear plastic bags containing a white substance believed to be methamphetamine. The youngest arrested was a 19-year-old farmer found with parcels of suspected marijuana in Savusavu, while a 19-year-old female and her friend were detained for failing to pay their taxi fare and were subsequently found with marijuana.
Efforts at policing include stop searches, roadblocks, and raids, complemented by operations from the K-9 Unit to enhance their fight against drug-related crime.
These arrests illustrate the ongoing struggle against drug offenses in Fiji and the proactive measures taken by law enforcement authorities. The police’s increased vigilance during the holiday season may help deter potential drug-related activities, fostering a safer community.
In summary, while the statistics concerning drug arrests may seem alarming, they reflect a dedicated effort by law enforcement to maintain public safety. The continued focus on anti-drug operations is a hopeful sign that authorities are committed to combating substance abuse and safeguarding communities.
