The Fiji Police Force reported that 76 individuals were apprehended this week due to drug-related crimes, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police- Operations Livai Driu. The police are actively increasing their efforts to combat drug offenses, especially during the festive season.
Among those arrested, the oldest was a 64-year-old man apprehended at the Ba fish market with seven sachets of what is suspected to be marijuana. Other notable cases include a 63-year-old carpenter caught with five marijuana plants in Bua, and a 58-year-old man from Lautoka found in possession of a bag containing dried leaves and over three thousand dollars, suspected to be drug proceeds.
Additionally, a 53-year-old Labasa farmer and a 52-year-old bowser attendant were arrested for possessing marijuana sachets, while a 51-year-old Lautoka electrician was caught with a significant amount of methamphetamine. The youngest suspect, a 19-year-old farmer, was taken into custody in Savusavu with five sachets of dried leaves.
Another incident involved two young women, aged 19 and 25, who were arrested for not paying their taxi fare. Upon search, they were found with marijuana, highlighting the pervasive issues tied to drug use and trafficking. A 29-year-old man from Makoi was also apprehended with two marijuana sachets, and during his arrest, he attempted to bribe the officer.
ACP Driu stated that these arrests were made through various operations, including vehicle checks, roadblocks, and raids, along with the help of K-9 units. The police are committed to increasing awareness and maintaining public safety during this festive time.
