The Fiji Police Force has announced the arrest of 76 individuals across the nation this past week on drug-related charges. Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations, Livai Driu, emphasized that these arrests are part of their daily efforts to combat drug offenses and that law enforcement will be increasing operations during the festive season.
Among those apprehended was a 64-year-old man arrested at the Ba fish market, who was found in possession of seven sachets of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana. Another notable arrest involved a 63-year-old carpenter in Bua, discovered with five green plants believed to be marijuana.
Additionally, a 58-year-old man from Lautoka was apprehended with a shopping bag containing dried leaves thought to be marijuana, alongside over three thousand dollars purportedly linked to criminal activities. A 53-year-old farmer from Labasa was also arrested on Tuesday, possessing a sachet of dried leaves, while a 52-year-old bowser attendant was caught on Friday at Wainibokasi with three sachets of dried leaves.
The arrests did not end there; a 51-year-old electrician in Lautoka was found in possession of a significant quantity of a white substance believed to be methamphetamine. The youngest individual arrested was a 19-year-old farmer from Savusavu, who was detained at a drinking spot with five clear plastic bags of dried leaves.
Even arrests involving minors were reported. A 19-year-old female from Nadi, along with her 25-year-old friend, was arrested for failing to settle a taxi fare and later found with marijuana during a search. Additionally, a 29-year-old man from Makoi attempted to bribe an officer after being caught with two sachets of marijuana.
ACP Driu noted that these drug arrests were facilitated through various methods, including stop-and-search operations, roadblocks, and raids, with the assistance of their K-9 Unit. He urged that awareness teams are actively engaging with the community to further combat these challenges.
