The Fiji Police Force reported the arrest of 76 individuals nationwide this week on drug-related charges. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, emphasized that the police are actively making daily arrests as part of their ongoing efforts to combat drug offenses, particularly as the festive season approaches.
Notably, among those detained was a 64-year-old man arrested at the Ba fish market with seven sachets of what is believed to be marijuana. Similarly, a 63-year-old carpenter from Bua was found with five marijuana plants at his residence. Additional arrests included a 58-year-old Lautoka man with a shopping bag containing marijuana and over $3,000 suspected to be proceeds from illicit activities.
Other cases involved a 53-year-old farmer from Labasa and a 52-year-old bowser attendant arrested for possessing marijuana. A 51-year-old electrician was apprehended with a significant amount of methamphetamine. The youngest individual arrested was a 19-year-old farmer caught with multiple sachets of marijuana.
Moreover, two young women from Nadi, aged 19 and 25, were detained after failing to pay their taxi fare, which led to the discovery of marijuana in their possession, while a 29-year-old man from Makoi was also caught with marijuana and attempted to bribe the arresting officer.
ACP Driu noted that these arrests resulted from stop-and-search operations, roadblocks, raids, and the assistance of the K-9 Unit, stressing the importance of community awareness in tackling drug abuse.
In summary, police efforts to clamp down on drug offenses are evident, particularly during this festive period when drug-related activities often escalate. The proactive measures being taken by law enforcement reflect a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
Looking forward, this ongoing vigilance by the authorities can inspire hope for a safer environment for Fiji’s residents, especially as the community comes together to celebrate the upcoming festive season.
