Fiji Police Complaints Decline 18% as Force Vows Tougher Discipline and Accountability

Complaints against police in Fiji have seen a significant decline of 18% over the past three months, with 230 cases reported from August through October, compared to 283 allegations during the same period last year. This update was provided by the Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, during a press conference where he acknowledged the improvements made but also emphasized the need for ongoing enhancements.

Commissioner Tudravu noted that the majority of complaints related to officers primarily involved issues of conduct, with 116 cases specifically addressing misconduct and 84 cases concerning neglect of duty. This downward trend is attributed to the Fiji Police Force’s firm handling of such complaints, signaling a commitment to accountability and discipline within the ranks.

“The reduction is also reflective of the tough approach taken in addressing issues of ill-discipline, and we know there is still room for improvement,” said Tudravu. He reassured the public that officers found abusing their authority would face serious repercussions, reinforcing the police’s commitment to professionalism and integrity in service delivery.

With the festive season approaching, the Commissioner has announced that the Fiji Police Force will enhance its collaborative efforts across various divisions to address crime and new challenges that may arise. This proactive approach, coupled with the reduction in complaints, highlights a positive trajectory for community policing efforts.

In previous reports, officials, including Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua, have echoed the importance of maintaining high standards among officers and emphasized that any grievances should be readily communicated to foster transparency and accountability. Past initiatives, such as the Police Reset Strategy, have also been aimed at enhancing the professionalism of the police force and rebuilding public trust.

Moving forward, the commitment to accountability within the Fiji Police Force is evident. As ongoing efforts focus on building a constructive relationship with the community and addressing past concerns of misconduct, there remains hope for a more effective and trusted law enforcement environment in Fiji. This revitalized approach sets a promising foundation for future improvements in public safety and police-community relations.
