The Fiji Police Force is taking measures to enhance its facilities, particularly those used for individuals in custody. This initiative comes in response to remarks made by Mohammed Saneem, the former Supervisor of Elections, who alleged that he endured ‘inhumane treatment’ during his detention last year.
Acting Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci acknowledged the concerns raised by Mr. Saneem, expressing the commitment of the police to make improvements. “We recognize the issues outlined by Mr. Saneem and will strive to implement enhancements,” Mr. Raikaci stated. He emphasized that the police are doing their best with the resources available, underscoring the need for better infrastructure for holding individuals in custody, whether they are suspects or awaiting trial.
In recent allegations, Mr. Saneem detailed his experience of being placed in a room with a disruptive drunken individual and later being moved to a holding cell reportedly contaminated with rat feces. His claims emerged as he challenged the legality of the charges against him concerning corrupt benefits associated with significant back pay.
The police’s commitment to improving facility conditions, including working with government and international partners, reflects a proactive approach to addressing detainee welfare and operational standards within the force. This development highlights a growing awareness of the need for humane treatment and better facilities for those in custody, which is a positive step towards reinforcing public confidence in law enforcement.
This initiative can be seen as a worthwhile investment in the country’s justice system, ensuring that individuals’ rights are upheld while also maintaining the integrity of the police force. By prioritizing such improvements, the Fiji Police Force is striving to build a safer and more respectful environment for all.
