Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu is urging the public to refrain from forming judgments about police investigations based solely on discussions circulating on social media. Speaking with Fiji One News in Navakasiga, Bua, Tudravu emphasized the importance of allowing investigations to be evaluated through the legal system rather than through public opinion online.
His comments come in response to widespread speculation regarding the arrests and charges of two individuals connected to the tragic death of Police Constable Peniasi Racagi, whose body was found along the shores of Lami. Tudravu acknowledged the public’s right to express concern, but he stressed the need for restraint against prematurely judging the officers working diligently on these investigations.
Tudravu highlighted that the investigative process must adhere to legal standards, stating, “The investigation is scrutinized by the court of law. That is where we take our evidence.” He noted that while the Force values the perspectives shared by the community, it is crucial for due process to be followed responsibly.
Addressing the role of police officers, Tudravu clarified that they do not independently decide on charges, as such decisions are governed by predefined legal procedures. “We have processes and procedures. We do not decide the charges,” he explained.
This call for patience and understanding from the Police Commissioner reflects a commitment to uphold the integrity of investigations, ensuring that justice is served fairly and effectively. It serves as a reminder of the importance of due process in maintaining trust between law enforcement and the public.
