Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has reaffirmed his commitment to accountability within the Fiji Police Force following recent allegations of assault involving officers. In response to a reported incident in Navua, where a 32-year-old man was allegedly assaulted by police, Commissioner Tudravu has made it clear that any breaches of law by police personnel will not be tolerated.

“The Criminal Investigations Department is currently looking into this matter, and regular updates have been provided to the victim regarding the investigation,” stated Tudravu. He emphasized that it is particularly unfortunate to see such claims at a time when the police are focused on rebuilding public trust, noting that incidents like these undermine the positive achievements of the force.

Tudravu firmly stated that any officer found to be abusing their lawful authority will face appropriate disciplinary measures. “Officers have been cautioned to adhere strictly to the law and best practices,” he added, reiterating that misconduct, whether from external sources or within the department, will not be condoned.

As the investigation progresses, Tudravu awaits a report from the Internal Affairs Unit to determine the appropriate action against the officers involved. This incident is part of a broader commitment by the police leadership in Fiji, reflecting similar sentiments expressed by other officials and past incidents, aiming to ensure accountability and restore public confidence in law enforcement.

Overall, this proactive stance signals hope for improved police-community relations, highlighting the steps being taken towards transparency and accountability. As investigations continue, there is a strong emphasis on fostering a safer and more trustworthy environment for all citizens.
