Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has highlighted the internal challenges the police force is grappling with while endeavoring to restore public trust, particularly amidst increasing drug-related cases involving officers. Speaking during the 27th Attorney General’s Conference in Nadi, Tudravu underscored the importance of institutional integrity, asserting that the dismissal of officers implicated in drug offences is crucial for rebuilding confidence in the police.
Between the years 2020 and 2025, 47 officers faced charges related to drug offences, a statistic that underlines the challenges within the organization. Despite acknowledging the criticism directed at the police, Tudravu emphasized that the majority of the force, consisting of over 5,000 officers, remains dedicated and honest in their service.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the commitment to remove individuals associated with drug offences from the ranks. He provided insight into the realities of drug enforcement operations in Fiji, indicating that the majority of drug arrests are associated with marijuana. Specifically, between 2022 and October 2025, the police recorded an alarming 8,076 instances of unlawful possession of marijuana, in stark contrast to 861 cases linked to methamphetamine.
While the focus of law enforcement remains firmly on tackling both marijuana and methamphetamine, Tudravu pointed out that the higher incidence of marijuana-related cases can be attributed to domestic cultivation. He emphasized the necessity of a more collaborative national strategy aimed at addressing the underlying causes of drug use and trafficking.
Tudravu called on various stakeholders to join forces in identifying the social and economic factors that lead individuals towards drug use, whether for personal consumption or as a means of income. He made it clear that while the police will continue to enforce laws regarding marijuana, long-term solutions to the drug problem will require a collective effort from all sectors of society.
Overall, the Commissioner’s address not only highlights the serious issues within the police force but also reflects a proactive stance towards improving community safety and well-being.
