The Fiji Police Force has reiterated its dedication to its responsibilities outlined in the Counter Narcotics Strategy focused on reducing supply, utilizing both proactive and reactive policing methods.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu addressed concerns regarding perceived police inaction in apprehending individuals involved in illegal drug trade activities. He emphasized that arrests are made nearly every day, reflecting the ongoing commitment to these efforts, where each arrest and seizure contributes to the overarching goal of reduction.
ACP Driu explained that all received intelligence is thoroughly evaluated and acted upon appropriately. He noted that the nature of drug operations can vary and some may require significant time to execute, with the primary objective being to ensure successful prosecutions. He highlighted the collaboration of several units, including the Fiji Detector Dog Unit, FPF K9 Unit, and the Serious Organized Crime and Intelligence Unit, which all support divisional operational initiatives.
In addition to enforcement measures, police officers are actively engaging various community sectors through community policing initiatives. Driu acknowledged the crucial role communities play in this process, noting a significant change in willingness to collaborate with law enforcement by sharing information and a strong desire to empower local communities, as evidenced by the number of invitations received for community awareness programs.
He encouraged community members to connect with their Crime Prevention Committees and Neighbourhood Watch Zones through their respective Divisional Manager Community Policing.
