Fiji Police Force Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu and Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Brigadier General Jone Kalouniwai convened for a crucial meeting, emphasizing the necessity for a comprehensive approach to combat the illicit drug trade. Their discussion highlighted the importance of enhancing collaboration between the police and military entities in tackling this pressing issue.
The RFMF Commander and his team received insights into the current drug situation in Fiji, which included law enforcement efforts from 2022 through 2025. This encompassed various aspects such as seizures, investigations, and arrests pertaining to both white and green drugs. The meeting also addressed concerns regarding the integrity of the Police Force, particularly in light of recent allegations involving officer participation in the illegal drug trade.
Commissioner Tudravu reassured that the drug situation remains controllable and manageable, in stark contrast to the public’s perception shaped by misinformation circulating on social media platforms. He conveyed a strong message that the fight against drugs must also encompass a battle against misinformation.
In solidarity, Brigadier General Kalouniwai reiterated this perspective, stressing that both institutions are not only combating drug-related challenges but are also faced with the task of addressing and correcting false narratives. He acknowledged the shared struggles each organization faces, particularly with limited resources, and assured continuing support for law enforcement initiatives.
Furthermore, Kalouniwai pointed out that the allegations against police officers could undermine public trust, prompting demands for swift disciplinary actions. However, he stressed the need to adhere to due process and the importance of upholding the rule of law in addressing these concerns.
Both leaders underscored that a unified, holistic strategy is essential in navigating the complexities of the illicit drug trade while restoring public confidence in law enforcement agencies. The commitment exhibited by the Fiji Police Force and the RFMF towards working together signals potential progress in safeguarding Fiji from the impacts of drug-related issues.
