Fiji is prepared to become the official home of the regional policing centres of excellence as part of the Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI). These centres will focus on providing training, assistance, research, best practices, and leadership specific to various areas of policing.
This announcement was made by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during his keynote address at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 Pacific Policing Event held in Sagafili Village, Samoa, last week. He expressed his satisfaction that Fiji is willing to host one of these centres, stating, “We have the required facilities and supporting infrastructure in place, ready to support such a regional initiative.”
The PPI aims to streamline policing arrangements throughout the Pacific, built around three main pillars: Regional Centres of Excellence, a Deployable Pacific Policing Support Group (PPSG), and a Coordination Hub located in Brisbane. Prime Minister Rabuka also highlighted the potential to enhance Australian support for the Black Rock training facility in Nadi, which serves not only as a military hub but also as a police and disaster relief centre.
