Fiji PM Urges Pacific Unity to Strengthen Regional Leadership

Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called for enhanced regional unity and a unified commitment to public leadership during his address welcoming senior government officials to Suva. The gathering, held at the Grand Pacific Hotel, marks the beginning of the Pacific Heads of Prime Minister’s Departments Meeting, which brings together secretaries and permanent secretaries responsible for governance, policy coordination, and administration throughout the Pacific region.

In his speech, Rabuka emphasized the significant roles these senior officials play in advising leaders and coordinating government efforts, stating, “You are at the engine room of governments.” He pointed out the increasing public expectations for greater transparency, accountability, and improved service delivery in the Pacific, urging attendees to collaborate and share their insights to bolster regional governance.

Rabuka reaffirmed Fiji’s dedication to multilateral cooperation and regional solidarity, highlighting the “Ocean of Peace Declaration” as a fundamental principle guiding Pacific diplomacy. As Pacific nations face global challenges, including climate change and geopolitical tensions, he underscored the necessity of collaboration, asserting that despite being small, “our faith and determination remain our greatest strength”.

The meeting includes closed-door discussions that will continue as delegates work towards enhancing leadership systems for meaningful outcomes in their respective nations. Similar themes of unity and cooperation were underscored earlier when Rabuka addressed the pressing security challenges faced by the Pacific, including climate change and economic pressures. His vision for a resilient and cooperative Pacific offers hope, as regional leaders prepare to unite against these challenges and strive for a peaceful and prosperous future across all Pacific nations.

This ongoing dialogue represents a significant step towards fostering collective strength and shared goals among Pacific countries, enhancing the capability of the region to effectively navigate current and future challenges while preserving its unique identities and ecosystems.
