Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called on individuals making recent allegations regarding police involvement in drug-related activities to file formal complaints with the appropriate authorities. In a statement made this afternoon, Rabuka emphasized that established investigative bodies within the government are well-equipped to thoroughly investigate such claims if they are properly reported.
His remarks come in response to growing speculation circulating on social media, which includes purported Viber messages that allegedly link police officers to criminal activities. Rabuka reassured the public that investigations are currently ongoing but highlighted the importance of presuming innocence for those alleged until proven guilty, cautioning against what he termed “trial by social media.”
When questioned about rumors that Brigadier General Manoa Gadai, a senior officer of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, was set to lead the investigations, the Prime Minister stated he was not aware of any such initiative and would need more information to respond appropriately. Nonetheless, Rabuka recognized the importance of enhanced cooperation between police and military forces in addressing the pressing drug crisis, noting the necessity for collaborative efforts between the leadership of both institutions to tackle the issue effectively.
The Prime Minister’s appeal for formal complaints and a systematic investigation underscores the seriousness of the allegations while promoting a fair process. This proactive stance aims to maintain public trust in law enforcement and ensure accountability in tackling drug-related challenges in the community.
