Fiji PM Rabuka unveils sweeping ministry reshuffle

Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has implemented a substantial restructuring of government ministries, appointing Esrom Immanuel as the new Minister for Finance, Commerce, and Business Development. This significant change, which took effect on 3 November, consolidates various roles that were previously scattered across multiple ministries, including Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, and Trade.

Under this new governmental structure, the Ministry of Finance will now operate as a standalone entity, while responsibilities for Strategic Planning, National Development, and Statistics will remain under the direct oversight of the Prime Minister’s Office. Notably, external trade functions are being shifted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the newly established Ministry of Commerce and Business Development will encompass cooperatives, investments, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), as well as national trade measurement and standards.

Additionally, communications will now be integrated under the Ministry of Policing, which is headed by Ioane Naivalurua, who takes on the dual role of Minister for Policing and Communications. Prime Minister Rabuka has emphasized that the Permanent Secretary in his office will coordinate closely with the Permanent Secretaries for Finance, Trade, Policing, and Foreign Affairs to ensure a seamless transition regarding staffing and budgetary responsibilities.

This governmental realignment is aimed at streamlining operations within the administration and enhancing efficiency in the management of the economy and service delivery. The move reflects a proactive approach as the government addresses the pressing challenges ahead in its final term. By optimizing the functionalities of the various ministries, there is a hopeful prospect for improved governance that could lead to positive outcomes for the citizens of Fiji while fostering greater trust in their administration.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, initiatives like these signal a commitment to adaptability and responsiveness within the government, which may invigorate efforts to address economic concerns and enhance public services.
