Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has firmly rejected suggestions for the military to take a leading role in drug investigations in Fiji, affirming that such efforts should remain under the jurisdiction of the police. He emphasized that while the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) can provide support, the fight against drugs must be led by law enforcement agencies.
His remarks come in light of serious public allegations suggesting potential links between some police officers and drug networks. Addressing these concerns, Rabuka highlighted the importance of cooperation between the Ministry of Policing, the Fiji Police Force, and the military, expressing confidence in their existing communication and operational collaboration.
Rabuka stated, “As far as I’m concerned, there is a very clear understanding between the two ministers…They have been trained, and all their professional life is based on the understanding that they must cooperate and work together when required.” This point underscores the foundational relationships intended to facilitate joint operations when necessary.
While acknowledging the severity of the allegations against police officers, the Prime Minister insisted that they must be accompanied by formal reports and substantial evidence. He remarked, “It’s up to those who are making the allegations to make reports… so that they can substantiate those allegations or throw them out as pure speculation.” This statement points to a commitment to due process as the government investigates certain matters, including the circulation of incriminating screenshots.
Rabuka reassured the public that while investigations are underway, it is essential to adhere to the principle of presumption of innocence until proven guilty. The Prime Minister’s stance reflects a balanced approach to law enforcement and military relations in the ongoing battle against drug-related issues in Fiji, emphasizing the necessity for accountability and thorough investigation before any conclusions can be drawn. The proactive measures highlight the government’s commitment to tackling drug crime while safeguarding the integrity of its institutions.
