Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has taken the opportunity of his New Year’s message to reinforce his Government’s dedication to combating crime, enhancing law enforcement, and bolstering public safety in Fiji. He made it clear that Fiji “will not tolerate criminal networks that profit from destroying lives,” signaling a strong stance against illicit activities.
Mr. Rabuka acknowledged the ongoing challenges that Fiji faces, particularly in relation to illicit drugs and violent crime, but he reassured citizens that authorities are ramping up efforts to restore safety and instill confidence within the communities. “We are strengthening enforcement, border controls, rehabilitation programmes, and community-based prevention,” he stated.
In a show of support for law enforcement bodies, the Prime Minister commended the Commissioner of Police and the Fiji Police Force for their commitment to ensuring safety and boosting public trust. He also mentioned the involvement of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) in national security efforts, indicating that their collaboration with the Police Force would enhance the government’s response to crime.
Mr. Rabuka emphasized the necessity of regional cooperation in combating transnational organized crime, particularly concerning Fiji’s maritime boundaries. He noted that cooperation with the RFMF and the Fiji Navy is vital to effectively “detect, disrupt and dismantle criminal syndicates and their business model.”
In addition to crime-related issues, the Prime Minister voiced his concern about the rising number of HIV cases, particularly among women and children. He reiterated that the Government is enhancing education, broadening testing options, and improving treatment available to those affected. “This is not just a medical challenge — it is a shared national responsibility,” he expressed, urging communities, families, and organizations to join in this collective effort.
Mr. Rabuka concluded his message by calling for unity and collaboration as Fiji enters the New Year, expressing optimism that “together, we can turn the tide” against these pressing challenges. This sentiment reflects a hopeful outlook for the future as the Government and citizens work hand-in-hand towards a safer and healthier Fiji.
