Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has officially terminated the appointment of Jese Saukuru as Minister for Youth and Sports, effective immediately, due to serious allegations concerning the misuse of public office. In a statement addressing the matter, Mr. Rabuka emphasized the importance of integrity in public office and the proper management of public resources, key principles that his government expects all officials to adhere to at all times.

The Prime Minister’s decision aims to facilitate a comprehensive and independent investigation by the Fiji Police Force into the claims of abuse linked to the Fiji Sports Council. Mr. Rabuka commented on the necessity of this dismissal, stating that it is crucial to ensure due process and to prevent any potential interference with the inquiry.

In light of the allegations, Mr. Rabuka has temporarily taken over the responsibilities of the Youth and Sports portfolio. Hon. Aliki Bia, the Assistant Minister, will assist with daily operations, ensuring that the ministry’s programs and services continue without disruption.

Furthermore, Mr. Rabuka directed the Board of the Fiji Sports Council to suspend its Chief Executive Officer, Ratu Gilbert Vakalalabure, to allow the investigation into the alleged misuse of funds to proceed smoothly. He reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stressing that allegations concerning the misuse of public resources must be addressed seriously through appropriate investigative and legal channels.

The Prime Minister concluded that the government will allow the investigation to unfold completely, and any decisions regarding future appointments or actions will follow once the investigative process is finished. This approach underscores the administration’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and maintaining high standards of integrity within public institutions.

Overall, the government’s proactive steps signal a commitment to transparency and accountability, reassuring the public of its dedication to responsible governance.
