Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced the initiation of an independent investigation concerning allegations tied to a planned overseas trip in January 2025 by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru. This decision comes following discussions between Rabuka and Saukuru regarding concerns over the minister’s upcoming travel to New Zealand, which will be funded by the Fiji Sports Council.

The investigation aims to address allegations regarding the travel arrangements, as well as claims of financial misconduct associated with Ratu Gilbert Vakalalabure, the Chief Executive Officer of the Fiji Sports Council. Prime Minister Rabuka has expressed confidence in the integrity of the investigation, noting that Saukuru has committed to not interfere with the proceedings.

In the meantime, the Prime Minister has authorized Saukuru’s previously arranged six-day tour of the Yasawa Group, set to commence this Sunday. Rabuka has assured the public that he will provide further updates as the situation unfolds, emphasizing the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

This development highlights the determination of the Fijian leadership to address concerns regarding governance and financial management within the sports sector, reinforcing a sense of responsibility toward public funds.
