Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has indicated that Jese Saukuru may be reinstated to his position as Minister of Youth and Sports, contingent upon the outcome of an ongoing investigation into his alleged involvement in the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) controversy. This statement follows Saukuru’s recent dismissal from the ministerial role, with Prime Minister Rabuka stepping in to assume responsibilities immediately.

Rabuka addressed reporters during the launch of Drug Free Sport Fiji at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay Hotel, coinciding with the National Sporting Organisations Conference, which hosted representatives from 32 sporting bodies. When questioned about Saukuru’s potential reinstatement, the Prime Minister affirmed that should the investigation absolve Saukuru of any wrongdoing, he would be welcomed back to his former role.

Saukuru’s dismissal was communicated via the official Fiji Government account on social media, underscoring the seriousness of the allegations against him. Rabuka emphasized the importance of respecting due process and allowing authorities to conduct their inquiries without interference. The Fiji Police Force has been tasked with investigating allegations of abuse of office related to the FSC.

The controversy surrounding Saukuru arose partly from claims that he and his wife traveled in business class to New Zealand due to a Fiji Airways contra deal connected to the Fijian rugby sevens tournament in Hamilton last year.

Saukuru, a member of the People’s Alliance Party led by Rabuka, entered Parliament and secured a Cabinet position after receiving 2,759 votes in the 2022 General Elections. At the time of his dismissal, Saukuru was returning from Kadavu.

This development highlights the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability within its ranks, as well as the critical nature of upholding public trust in leadership.
