Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed confidence in the readiness of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces for future peacekeeping responsibilities. During a traditional welcoming ceremony at Albert Park, he praised the soldiers who recently returned from their deployment in Iraq, emphasizing their crucial contributions to international peacekeeping efforts.
In his remarks, Mr. Rabuka acknowledged the sacrifices made by the troops, stating, “I thank you for carrying out your duties in Iraq, and I know you will be ready if there is a call for the troops.” He underlined the importance of the military’s role, especially in addressing current needs within Fiji.
Lieutenant Colonel Timoci Naivalu, the commanding officer for the returning contingent, shared his emotional experience of leaving Iraq, mentioning the pain of losing 11 comrades during their mission. “As we sat in the plane to return home, all our eyes were filled with tears, knowing 11 of us did not make it back home,” he said. He reflected on the military’s two-decade involvement in Iraq, noting the deep connections formed with the nation.
Colonel Naivalu also expressed his gratitude towards those who assisted in organizing the welcoming ceremony and offered an apology to the government and the people of Fiji regarding the military’s past actions in an incident from a few years ago. His acknowledgment of past mistakes highlights a commitment to accountability and growth within the military.
This event serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the Fijian forces and their readiness to support global peace efforts while also addressing national priorities. The hope for a united and strengthened Fiji resonates throughout the military community and the nation’s leadership as they look to the future.
