Fiji PM Hails Chinese Community as China-Fiji Ties Mark Milestones

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed deep appreciation for the Chinese community in Fiji, recognizing their longstanding contributions to the nation’s growth and development. Speaking at a recent celebration marking 170 years since the arrival of the first Chinese settlers and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Fiji and the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Rabuka highlighted the courage, perseverance, and partnership that the Chinese community has exemplified throughout their history in Fiji.

During the event held at Ratu Sukuna Park, the Prime Minister noted the significant role of the Chinese community in shaping modern Fiji through their hard work and resilience. “It is truly a heartwarming scene to behold such a vibrant sea of red,” he remarked, acknowledging how the Chinese families have built businesses and contributed to the overall economy and culture of the nation. He paid tribute to early settlers like Moy Ba Ling, who arrived in 1855, honoring the families whose legacies remain integral to Fiji’s historical narrative.

The Prime Minister also reflected on the valuable partnership between Fiji and the PRC, emphasizing that these diplomatic ties have led to remarkable benefits in various sectors, including infrastructure, agriculture, education, and health. He noted, “Fiji and China established diplomatic relations based on mutual respect, equality, and non-interference, opening a new chapter in our partnership.” Rabuka underscored the mutual support both nations have demonstrated during global challenges, showcasing their shared solidarity and friendship.

The president of the Chinese Association of Fiji, Jenny Seeto, echoed these sentiments during her address, emphasizing the values of hard work, integrity, and family that have characterized the contributions of the Chinese community for over a century. She reflected on the journey of the early settlers who came to Fiji with little but the hopes of establishing new lives, integrating into local communities and enriching Fiji’s diverse cultural landscape. As she recognized the achievements of Chinese Fijian families from small business ownership to professional sectors like medicine and engineering, she pointed out that they have become a crucial component of Fiji’s agricultural backbone as well.

Seeto conveyed gratitude to Prime Minister Rabuka for acknowledging the importance of the Chinese community in shaping Fiji’s past and future, describing the event as a symbol of friendship, respect, and shared progress among the diverse ethnic groups in Fiji.

As both Fiji and China prepare to celebrate next year’s milestones, these historical anniversaries stand as a testament to the enduring contributions of the Chinese community in fostering economic development and cultural exchange, offering hope for continued collaboration and mutual prosperity in the years to come.
