Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has responded to international media coverage regarding the suspected alcohol poisoning incident at the Warrick Fiji Resort, calling the reports “highly exaggerated.” In a recent press conference, Rabuka emphasized the significance of countering misinformation to safeguard Fiji’s reputation as a premier travel destination.

Recently, seven guests from the resort, located on Fiji’s Coral Coast, experienced distressing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and neurological issues, which led to their initial admission to Sigatoka Hospital. The guests were later transferred to Aspen Lautoka Hospital for further treatment. Notably, the affected individuals had consumed Pina Colada cocktails at the Suva Wing Bar, while no other visitors at different resort bars that served the same drink reported similar health concerns.

In light of this, Prime Minister Rabuka called for an effort to clarify the situation and tackle any misinformation surrounding the event. He assured the public that Fiji remains a safe destination for travelers, encouraging potential tourists by stating, “…it’s safe to come to Fiji.” He raised questions about the motivations behind the negative coverage, suggesting it could be driven by competitors in the tourism industry.

Rabuka classified the incident as isolated and maintained that it does not present a broader threat to Fiji’s tourism sector. Furthermore, Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka confirmed that toxicology reports found no illicit substances or methanol in the liquor samples related to the incident, reinforcing the message of safety.

This incident highlights the importance of transparency and quick governmental response in the tourism sector, reassuring travelers and maintaining Fiji’s positive image. Despite the challenges presented by negative media reports, the commitment of government officials to address concerns indicates that Fiji is dedicated to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors.

In summary, the incident involving the seven guests is now viewed as an isolated case, bolstered by the findings of the toxicology report, which should help restore confidence in Fiji as a safe tourist destination. As the government works to address misinformation, the hope remains that travelers continue to choose Fiji for their vacation plans.
