The Fiji Government has reiterated its unwavering support for the Banaban community as it celebrated the 80th Anniversary of their arrival on Rabi Island, an event observed on Monday at Tabwewa. Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, reflected on the occasion as a poignant reminder of the resilience, strength, and unity demonstrated by the Banaban people since their relocation to Rabi in 1945 amidst challenging circumstances.

Minister Vosarogo recognized the struggles endured by the early settlers and commended the community for their efforts in reconstructing governance systems and transforming Rabi into a sanctuary rooted in dignity, identity, and hope. He emphasized the government’s commitment to further empowering the community by informing attendees that an evaluation of the Banaban Act is presently underway. This review aims to ensure that future elections for the Rabi Council of Leaders align with national standards and are conducted by the Fiji Elections Office, enhancing transparency and public trust.

In his address, the Minister also unveiled plans for a Cabinet Paper concerning the naturalization of Banabans and Kioans, emphasizing that this initiative marks a significant stride toward their full recognition and integration into the Fijian societal fabric.

Moreover, Minister Vosarogo highlighted ongoing government investments in infrastructure, transportation, and vital services on Rabi. He pointed out initiatives such as the upgrading of community facilities, the supply of vehicles and boats, and advancements on essential projects including the Karoko Landing and Vunikura Jetty, all aimed at improving connectivity and fostering economic opportunities for the community.

“The Government of Fiji will continue to stand with the Banaban people, honour your history, and walk alongside you into the future,” Minister Vosarogo affirmed, reinforcing the government’s dedication to supporting the Banaban community’s growth and well-being. This commitment signals a hopeful future as the community continues to thrive in their new home.
