The Ministry of Employment in Fiji has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding local workers engaged in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme from any form of exploitation. Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh addressed concerns regarding the alleged mistreatment of Fijian workers employed by foreign companies, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to tackle these issues.
Singh highlighted the ministry’s proactive measures, which include regular visits to workplaces and the appointment of country liaison officers to facilitate communication between employers and workers. He noted that over the past few months, significant progress has been made in addressing the concerns raised by workers. During recent visits, officials divided into teams to reach as many workers as possible, focusing on areas that reported grievances.
The minister reported that there are currently 331 workplaces across Australia where Fijian workers are employed, acknowledging the challenge of visiting all locations. However, the ministry is dedicated to targeting those locations that have received negative feedback.
Additionally, Singh underscored the importance of upholding equitable labor standards for all in Fiji, stating that the same minimum standards apply to both local and foreign migrant workers. This commitment to equality ensures that all employees are treated fairly in the workplace, fostering a culture of respect and fairness.
